Puffing Billy Steam Train
Built in 1900 Puffing Billy the rail and locomotives are remnants of the original five narrow gauge lines (2 ft 6 in (762 mm) that originally carried goods and services from the Dandenong Ranges to the bigger rail head.
From early 1950’s rail services declined due to the popularity of road travel and the Puffing Biily steam train and rail system became a financial liability and in 1954 was closed by the government.
During a series of farewell trips the public and rail enthusiasts realizing the loss of heritage, formed the Puffing Billy Preservation Society and began restoration.
Four locomotives were found and completely rebuilt and by the early 1990’s, 5 of the 6 surviving NA locomotives were in prime running condition.
Soon Puffing Billy became a popular tourist attraction. With refurbished open-sided and saloon carriages and a new track and profits from tickets sales, Puffing Billy at last was viable.
Ticket sales paid the professional train drivers were employed while Society volunteers took the role of conductors, checking tickets on the train, and fund-raising.
